How we work

Methodology & editorial standards

This page explains how Honest101 gathers data, how the ratings we show are sourced and attributed, and how the affiliate relationship works.

Sources we use

We work from primary sources: a manufacturer's own support documentation and knowledge base, official product pages, and retailer listings. Every spec on this site is tied to a source and an access date where possible. Where two sources disagree — for example a maker's support article against a retailer listing — we publish the manufacturer's documented value and note the retailer's rather than silently choosing one, and where a maker's own articles conflict we show both.

What we refuse to publish

Honest101 publishes no numeric editorial score, no star rating of its own, and no ranking. Where we show a rating it is the retailer's own aggregate figure for that product, attributed to the retailer with the date we captured it — never an arbitrary number — and products with no sourced rating say so plainly.

Verified vs. unverified

Each spec is labeled confirmed, partial, or unconfirmed. Where sources disagree, the affected row is labeled partial and the disagreement is spelled out. Marketing claims — discounts, urgency, 'lifetime sharp' durability, viral social proof — are logged but excluded from the assessment.

No hands-on testing (yet)

This comparison rests on published specifications, not physical testing. If we ever run hands-on tests, we will say what we did, how, and when — and we will never imply a test we did not run.

How we choose what to compare

The comparison set is made of named, widely available chef knives whose makers publish specs on their own product pages. We record each field as stated and mark anything unstated as 'Not stated on page'. No placeholder or invented products appear in the table.

Pricing and comparisons

We do not republish prices because they change and we have not confirmed a live figure. The side-by-side table shows verified specs only. We publish no numeric editorial score, no ranking and no best-pick.

Ratings and owner reviews we cite

Where we show a rating, it is the retailer's own aggregate figure for that product, attributed to the retailer with the date we captured it. Honest101 does not verify it, it is not a hands-on test by us, and any product we hold no sourced rating for says so rather than showing an invented number. We quote only short, attributed excerpts from owner reviews. We deliberately publish no outbound link to the retailer — the only outbound commercial link on this site is the clearly marked affiliate link.

How we make money

Outbound links marked sponsored are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Matsato is our featured affiliate partner, and that can affect placement and coverage — it never changes the tag inputs or the rules, or the source-based specs and limitations we publish.

Integrity rules currently enforced by the build:

  • No fabricated data. Honest101 publishes no numeric editorial score and no ranking. Where a retailer publishes an aggregate rating we show it on the card and attribute it to the retailer with the capture date; any product we hold no sourced rating for reads “No sourced rating yet”. No lab tests, hands-on results, stock levels, or discounts are invented.
  • No price is republished as a confirmed merchant price — pricing and availability change and were not independently confirmed.
  • The comparator set is filled from four named, verified competitor products. No placeholder or invented products.
  • A single hard-coded affiliate link is used with rel="sponsored noopener"; no analytics, pixels, or third-party scripts are loaded.
  • Total units sold is only shown when a source provides a quantity with a qualifier, period, source and as-of date; otherwise it reads "Sales data unavailable". Marketplace snapshots are never presented as lifetime totals.

Ratings and the numbers Honest101 publishes

Honest101 publishes no numeric editorial score, no star rating of its own, and no ranking. The only rating shown is a retailer's own aggregate figure for that product, attributed to the retailer with the date it was captured. Any product we hold no sourced rating for says so instead of showing a number.

Where a shown rating comes from: A sourced rating is the retailer's own aggregate of customer ratings. It is not collected or verified by Honest101 and it is not a hands-on test by us. Every rating is attributed to the retailer with the date we captured it, and we publish no outbound link to that retailer — the only outbound commercial link on this site is the clearly marked affiliate link.

When we show no rating: Any product we hold no sourced rating for reads “No sourced rating yet”. Honest101 holds no sourced rating for this product, so we show none rather than guess.

The affiliate relationship cannot change which ratings are shown or how they are attributed.

Sales and units-sold data

Total units sold is shown only when a source provides a figure with a clear quantity, qualifier, period, source and as-of date. Marketplace sales badges that cover only a recent window are not lifetime totals and are never presented as one.

  • quantity — the number of units
  • qualifier — what the number counts (e.g. lifetime units, orders)
  • period — the time window the number covers
  • source — who published the number
  • asOf — the date the number was captured

No figure meets all five fields for these knives, so every card reads "Sales data unavailable". No marketplace snapshot is presented as a total.
