What the published grounding research actually says

The makers of these sheets lean on the grounding literature, so here it is, cited to the journal rather than to a sales page. Four of the studies most often quoted are listed below, with what each one actually did and how large it was. None of them tested the five products compared on this page, and we have not tested them either.

Ghaly M, Teplitz D. The biologic effects of grounding the human body during sleep as measured by cortisol levels and subjective reporting of sleep, pain, and stress. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2004; 10(5): 767-776.

Twelve participants slept on grounding sheets for eight weeks. The study reported changes in cortisol rhythm, and participants reported improved sleep and reduced pain and stress. Self-reported outcomes, small sample, no blinding.

What does a grounding bed sheet actually connect to?

The sheet has conductive silver thread woven into the fabric and a snap connector. A cord runs from that connector to the ground port of a wall outlet - in a US outlet the round bottom hole, which carries no live current and is wired to earth. Earthing's own setup guide also has you check that the outlet is wired correctly with the included outlet checker, and recommends checking the cord and product regularly. Any sheet only works while the cord is attached and the outlet really is grounded.

How much silver does a grounding sheet need?

That is the number worth comparing, and the makers here state it differently: BareEarth says '10%+ pure silver threading', The Grounding Co states a 5% silver fibre blend, GroundingWell states 5% pure silver fibre, and L'AGRATY states 10% conductive silver fibre. Earthing states no silver percentage at all. A higher percentage is not automatically better - conductivity also depends on how the thread is woven and whether the sheet stays connected - but the figure should be published, which is why it is a row in the table below.

Will a grounding sheet work under a normal fitted sheet?

Two makers address this directly. BareEarth states its sheet works through your fitted sheet, and Earthing states its products ground you through one thin layer of fabric such as a sheet or clothing. The other three do not state it on the page, so treat it as unconfirmed for them rather than assuming.

How do I wash one without killing the conductivity?

Machine washable is the common answer, but the detail matters. The Grounding Co states you should skip bleach and fabric softeners because residue coats the conductive fibres, and says the silver threads are designed to stay active through repeated washes when handled that way. BareEarth states machine washable and does not publish a temperature. GroundingWell and Earthing do not state a wash method on the pages we checked. Follow the maker's own care label over anything on this page.

Is the health side actually proven?

Studied, not settled. The research cited on this page is real and published - Ghaly and Teplitz in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2004), a review by Chevalier and colleagues in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health (2012), Oschman and colleagues in the Journal of Inflammation Research (2015), and a pilot study by Lin and colleagues in Healthcare (2022) - but the studies are small (roughly 12 to 44 participants), several outcomes are self-reported, and none of them tested the specific products compared here. We have not tested them either, and we publish no conductivity or sleep measurement of our own.
